LOS ANGELES (AP) A man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for raping a 26-year-old woman, stabbing her 20 times and then burying her alive in a shallow grave on the campus of a Hollywood college. The woman later testified she kept herself alive by jamming dirt and leaves into her wounds to stem the bleeding until she was discovered. She was rushed to a hospital where a surgeon performed what a prosecutor termed "some nearly miraculous work." Superior Court Judge Kathleen Parker imposed the maximum sentence on James Earl Gibbs, who was convicted of raping and stabbing his victim on Nov.

20, 1980, and burying her on the campus of Hollywood's Immaculate Heart College. Dr. Eugene Flaum testified at Gibbs' trial that "the stab wounds severed her jugular vein, carotid artery and larynx." He said she was so seriously injured he thought he was "probably operating on a The woman testified that she accepted Gibbs offer to drive her home from a Hollywood bar and that she did not suspect "the nightmare that was to happen" when he told her he had to first stop at his apartment. Once inside, she said, he grabbed her by the throat, punched her, tore off her dress and raped her. She passed out, she testified.

Later, he tossed her nude body into his car, took her to a wooded area near the college and went into a frenzy of stabbing, she said. After she was discovered by a security guard, she was rushed into surgery at Holywood Presbyterian Hospital. Deputy district attorney Marissa Batt said that Gibbs, 38, came to California in 1979 after serving a three-year prison term for stabbing his wife to death in Saginaw, Mich.

In that slaying, the body also was discarded in a wooded area, said Ms. Batt. "But in this case, the victim survived and she clawed and crawled her way out of the grave," said Ms. Batt. "With some miraculous work by a surgeon, she lived to testify against Mr.
