Tuesday, March 11, 1986 C-3 Central absentee policy confusing to board members By GILLIAN DAY Courier-News Writer Hunterdon Central High School Board of Education members found last night that they, too, were confused when they tried to interpret an attendance policy that flunks students who have more than five unexcused absences in a course. The policy confusion prompted the school principal to ask for a meeting between the committee that drafted the original policy and the committee that revised it last year. Parents recently complained that failing grades were too drastic a punishment for unexcused absences. Under the policy, parents must explain why their child has missed school for any reason other than a death in the immediate family, a religious holiday, a field trip or a meeting with an administrator or counselor. Students with more than five unexplained absences in a markimg period receive an grade in the course.

Absences beyond five days must be verified by a doctor's note. The policy is being reviewed by the committee that revised the original policy in September. The re- Tony Kovar, 29, of Union, is yesterday to fumes from five gallons Scientific Gases in the North Branch visions were made because parents were abusing the policy by excusing their children after the absences rather 1 than before. Additionally, officials said taking children on vacation during the school year was not a legitimate absence. This is the first semester the revised policy has been in effect.

Principal Dr. David Myers said the main confusion stems from a paragraph explaining noncumulative absences, which reads: "Parental verification for absence due to illness or injury will be accepted for up to five absences in a marking period, up to eight absences in a semester course and up to 15 absences in a yearlong course." Myers said the paragraph is misinterpreted when compared with another part of the policy that reads: "A student will receive an 'F' grade in a scheduled course after his or her cumulative absences exceed the following limits: a. Five absences in any one marking period; b. Eight absences in any semester courses; c. Fifteen absences in any year course." Hunterdon Central High School serves students from East Amwell, Raritan Township, Readington, Delaware Township and Flemington.

-News Photo By Steve Klaver examined after being exposed of spilled nitric acid at M-G section of Branchburg. Spill of acid forces business ev evacuations By LESLIE WERSTEIN Courier-News Staff Writer BRANCHBURG About 100 people were evacuated from six businesses in the township's industrial section yesterday when a tank of fuming nitric acid leaked outside; a gas storage facility, police said. One employee of M-G Scientific Gases was injured when he tried to stop the leak. Nitric acid burned the hand of Tony Kovar, 29, of Union. He was treated at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville and released.

M-G Scientific, located at 175 Meister Ave. in the North Branch section, is a division of M-G Burdett Gas Products Co. of Valley Forge, Pa. The facility here stores a variety of gases, including highly combustible hydrogen. Red fuming nitric acid, the type that leaked yesterday, is highly toxic when inhaled and is corrosive to the skin.

The chemical, which is used in rocket fuels and laboratories, is flammable and explosive. Police Officer Michael Brunson said that police saw yellow smoke spewing from behind the building at 2:13 p.m. and thought it was a brush fire. The smoke came from the five gallons of nitric acid spilled when it was being emptied from a small tank into the main supply, Brunson said, adding that the leak developed in the tube between the two tanks. Employees of M-G and five neighboring businesses were evacuated for about an hour, police said.

Brunson and Health Officer Richard Martini said there appeared to be no remaining health hazard from the spill. M-G Scientific officials here referred calls to the firm's Valley Forge legal department, which did not return telephone calls. The new budget includes an ambitious schedule of road improvement projects, but the committee said it will rebuild the roads with tax money raised through the budget, not long-term bonding. The budget includes $743,000 to reconstruct five township roads that Township Administrator Eugene Dunworth said are in "deplorable" condition. The roads Fawn Drive, Ranch Haven Road, Cherryville Hollow Road, Plennert Road and Stanton Station Road are just a handful of the dozens of roads that officials would repair if the township had the money, Hoffman said. Planners predict the township's 1980 population of 8,292 will double within five years.

Other increases in the budget also have to do with growth, including hiring an additional police officer to bring the department to 19 officers, hiring another Road Department, employee and a new fire code official. The budget includes a $70,000 allocation for five new police cars, two of which would be to replace patrol cars demolished in separate accidents involving Detective Wayne Pedrick and suspended Police Chief Alfred Phillips.
